SKIDMORE COLLEGE

New Full Day Camp for 2025!

SKidmore Tennis II

This summer marks the debut of the Skidmore College tennis camp, bringing the same level of excellence and expertise that has defined our camps for over 30 years. Modeled after Wilson’s programs throughout the country which have welcomed thousands of campers, the Skidmore camp offers an exciting array of options designed to inspire and challenge players of all skill levels.

Each camper receives personal attention, advanced teaching techniques, intensive drill work, and game/match play, all in a fun and competitive environment. We break the campers into small instructional groups of similar ages and abilities so each child works in a group commensurate with their experience level. We tailor each program to the level of the players. Beginners get a heavy dose of swing technique and fundamentals, while more advanced players focus on strategy, point building, percentage tennis, etc.

The Wilson Collegiate Tennis Camps are the premier camps for young players who strive to learn the game, improve their skills, and participate in middle school, high school, USTA team tennis, or tournaments.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE CAMP INCLUDE:

  • Comprehensive instructional program with daily teaching progressions
  • Small instructional groups to ensure individual attention
  • All the latest Wilson equipment & Great Wilson prizes to win

HEAD MEN’S TENNIS COACH

Skidmore College

Andrew James “AJ” Nelson was named the Skidmore head men’s tennis coach in July, 2024.

Nelson most recently served as the assistant women’s tennis coach at Columbia University. During his five seasons in New York, Nelson coached multiple nationally ranked Division I players and helped the team achieve its highest-ever national ranking at No. 21 before the 2019-20 season was cut short with the team holding an 11-2 dual record.

Before his time at Columbia, Nelson was a teaching professional and director of junior tennis at The Meadow Club in Southampton, New York. Concurrently, he served as assistant director of the Wilson Collegiate Tennis Camps for youth players aged 8-18.

Nelson began his collegiate coaching career as a volunteer assistant at The University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 2012. He then spent a season as assistant coach for both the men’s and women’s programs at Colgate University.

An accomplished collegiate player, Nelson competed for The University of Richmond, where he served as team captain for two years. He earned All-Atlantic 10 Conference honors in doubles in both his junior and senior seasons. FACILITY

McCaffery-Wagman Tennis Center

Skidmore unveiled the outdoor tennis courts at McCaffery-Wagman Tennis and Wellness Center and held its first-ever competition at the new complex in September of 2023.

McCaffery-Wagman Tennis and Wellness Center, which is adjacent to the new courts, will bring Skidmore’s physical and mental health resources together in a single space, open doors for everyone to pursue athletics and fitness, and create a welcoming and inclusive space for all centered around health and wellness.

In addition to the outdoor courts, The LEED-certified project will offer four new indoor courts, new locker rooms, and a meeting room for teams.

“This visionary project is one that will support everyone in the Skidmore community. Sustainability and diversity, equity, and inclusion are our guiding principles,” said Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs and Director of Athletics Gail Cummings-Danson.
