A Quality Racket for Your Young Player: Choosing the Right Kids Tennis Racket

Picking the right tennis racket for your child can feel overwhelming—there are so many sizes, styles, and specs to choose from!  Whether your child is picking up a racket for the very first time or already serving up some heat, here’s what you need to know when choosing a kids’ tennis racket—and how Wilson Tennis Camps can help along the way.

Why Racket Size Matters

One of the most important things to look for in a kids’ racket is the size. A racket that’s too big can make it hard for kids to swing comfortably, while one that’s too small won’t give them the reach or power they need as they grow. Sizing for kids rackets works a bit differently than adult rackets.

Here’s a general size guide based on your child’s height:

  • Under 40 inches tall: 19” racket
  • 40–44 inches tall: 21” racket
  • 45–49 inches tall: 23” racket
  • 50–55 inches tall: 25” racket
  • 56 inches or taller: 26” racket or consider transitioning to an adult racket

If your player is on the borderline between sizes, we usually recommend trying the smaller option for better control—especially for beginners. Kid-friendly rackets are designed to be light and maneuverable, which helps build proper swing technique and avoid injury. Some of Wilson’s most popular adult sized rackets also come in these junior sizes, like the Clash 26, or Ultra Blue 25. Another popular kids racket is the Minions, which is exactly what you’re picturing… Covered in everyone’s favorite yellow aspiring villains. Nothing builds confidence on the court more than perfecting your forehand with a racket covered in Minions! You can read more about Wilson’s kids rackets in this article.

Let Them Test It Out at Camp!

At Wilson Tennis Camps, we know how important the right gear is for young players. That’s why we always have a variety of junior and adult size rackets available at camp for kids to try. This gives them a chance to get a feel for different sizes and styles before you commit to buying one.

Camp is the perfect place to experiment with equipment under the guidance of experienced coaches—and to learn what feels best on the court. Skill level and experience always play a role when choosing the best racket, and our coaches have their expert eyes on your young player and can help you determine which racket is the best fit.

Ready for a Full-Size Racket?

If your child is getting taller, stronger, or more advanced in their game, it might be time to look at adult rackets. We’ve put together a helpful guide on choosing the right full-size tennis racket when they’re ready for that next step. And of course, our coaches will be there with your choice of rackets to try at camp before you buy!

At the end of the day, the best racket is the one your child feels confident using. It should be comfortable in their hands, easy to swing, and—most importantly—fun to play with! Looking for more hands-on experience? Join us at one of our Wilson Tennis Camps around the country this season. With expert coaching, skill-based training, and access to quality equipment, your young player will be set up for success—and a whole lot of fun.
