MEET YOUR COACHES

Director: Billy Boykin

In the summer in 2010, a national search to find Charlotte’s 16th head men’s tennis coach led the 49ers to points far and wide before choosing a familiar candidate with conference ties in Billy Boykin. Boykin came to Charlotte from Atlantic 10 Conference foe Richmond, where he had been the head coach for two years.

In his first season at Charlotte in 2011, Boykin led the 49ers to a fifth-place finish at the conference championships and an 8-16 inaugural campign, placing a pair of student-athletes on the All-Conference lists.

In 2012, Boykin guided the team to a 15-8 overall record and an undefeated season in Atlantic 10 Conference play. For the second time in school history, Charlotte earned top seed in the conference tournament. They tied for third in the tournament and placed a school record of four student-athletes on the All-Atlantic 10 team.

In 2013, under Boykin’s guidance the 49ers won 14 matches and reached the semifinals of the Atlantic 10 Tournament. The 49ers 14 wins (15 wins in 2012) gave the 49ers at least 14 wins in consecutive seasons for the first time since the 1989-90 seasons. Four 49ers earned All-Atlantic 10 honors last season.

Billy, the son of former head coach, Jim Boykin, who retired after 17 seasons, came to Charlotte in the midst of a tennis renaissance, as the 49ers unveiled the brand-new, state-of-the-art Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex in 2011, featuring office space, locker rooms, conference space, box seating a team lounge and a training room.

Prior to Richmond, Boykin was the men’s and women’s assistant coach at the College of Charleston. He was involved with all phases of the Cougars’ nationally ranked tennis programs. Before Charleston, Boykin served for one year as the assistant coach at his alma mater, Davidson College.
